Lost, Stolen, or Damaged EBT Card: How to Get a Replacement
Updated September 2026
If your EBT card is lost or stolen, the most important thing is to report it right away — reporting it deactivates the card immediately, so no one else can spend your remaining balance while you wait for a new one. If your card is just damaged, worn out, or expired, there's nothing urgent to report; you can request a routine replacement using the same phone number.
Card still in hand but declined, locked, or acting up? See our EBT card troubleshooting guide instead — this page covers replacement, not repair.
CheckEBTCardBalance is an independent informational resource and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the USDA, any state government, or any EBT card issuer. Always confirm details directly with the official source before relying on them.
Report it immediately
Call your state's EBT customer service number as soon as you notice your card is missing — it's available 24/7. The same toll-free number you'd use to check your balance also handles lost and stolen card reports, so there's no separate number to look up.
Once you report it, your old card number stops working right away and your benefits are safe. You'll then be issued a new card with the same remaining balance.
How Long a Replacement Card Takes
Turnaround time varies by state — most mail a replacement within about a week of your report, though a few take longer and some offer faster options like same-day pickup at a local benefits office. See the table below for your state's typical timeframe.
If you've moved recently, confirm your mailing address with your state's EBT customer service line when you report the card lost, since a replacement can only be mailed to the address on file.
Damaged or Expired Card? Requesting a Replacement
A damaged, worn-out, or expired card isn't a security issue, so there's no need to report it as lost or stolen — just call your state's EBT customer service number below and ask for a replacement. Your card number and balance carry over to the new card.
Most states issue replacement cards for free. A few allow only a limited number of free replacements per year and charge a small fee after that — for example, Pennsylvania's ACCESS card can carry a $2.50 replacement fee in some circumstances — so ask about your state's specific policy when you call.

Protecting Your Card Going Forward
Card skimming at the point of sale is a common way EBT numbers get stolen without the card itself going missing. Each state page on this site has specific fraud and skimming protection tips — find your state to read them.
